Catching Speckled Trout in Port Aransas

Charter Fishing with Red Tag Guide Service

If redfish are the bullies, speckled trout are the snipers. Fast, flashy, and just unpredictable enough to keep you guessing. When the conditions line up — light wind, moving tide, good clarity — trout fishing around Port A turns into a clinic.

Some days it’s limits before lunch. Other days, it’s a few good bites in the right spots.

Either way, it’s fun fishing—and Captain Randy knows every drop that holds ‘em.

How We Fish for Trout

They’re not always in the same place, so we stay mobile. Grass flats, shell beds, channel edges, sand pockets—it all depends on the tide and time.

  • Drift fishing with live shrimp under a popping cork

  • Free-lined baits when they’re suspended off bottom

  • Soft plastics or topwater if we’re chasing them early and aggressive

Best Times for Catching Specks
They’re catchable most of the year, but spring and fall are prime time for quality fish. Cooler temps, active tides, and less boat traffic make a difference.

Prime: March–May & October–December

Summer: Good numbers, especially early and late

Winter: Slower, but still possible in deep holes or warm pockets especially here due to our mild temps

Why We Love Trout Fishing
They’re accessible, plentiful, and fun to catch on light tackle. Plus, when you hook into a big one (23"+), they’ll headshake and dive like they own the bay.

And for those who like to keep a few for the cooler?Trout are top-tier table fare—light, flaky, and perfect for a cast-iron skillet.
Fish Local, Fish Smart
There’s no substitute for time on the water—and Captain Randy’s got decades of it. He knows when the trout are moving, when to slow it down, and when to get aggressive.

Bonus: Every charter includes a 360° video keepsake of your day on the water.
