Charter Fishing with Red Tag Guide Service

You don’t catch flounder by accident—not often, anyway. These fish are camo-colored ambush artists that bury themselves in the mud and strike from the shadows.

It’s patient fishing. But when you catch one, it’s always worth it.

Whether we’re drifting a drop-off or working a soft plastic along the bottom, flounder are a solid bonus fish—or a dedicated target if you’re up for the challenge.

How We Fish for Flounder

They won’t chase bait very far. The key is getting bait right in their face and giving them a reason to bite.

  • Soft plastics on jigheads, slow-hopped along the bottom

  • Live mud minnows or finger mullet near structure

  • Working tidal drains and channel edges

You’ll feel the bite like dead weight or a soft tap. Slowly let them eat, gently raise the rod tip and keep ‘em coming to the boat—flounder are famous for spitting the hook if you hesitate or let slack in your line.

When to Target Flounder
There’s always a few around, but the action heats up in late fall as they move toward the Gulf for their annual migration.

Best Time: October–November

Bonus Bites: Spring through early fall, especially near structure
Why Flounder Are Customer Favorites
For starters, they’re some of the best-eating fish on the coast.

Thin fillets, mild flavor, and a perfect canvas for stuffing, frying, or grilling. A flounder limit is a win at the cleaning table every time.

Plus, they’re easy to catch and put up a great fight. Especially great for kids and families.
Captain Randy’s Take
You’ve got to fish for ‘em slow, and you’ve got to pay attention. But when that flounder thumps and you stick the hook, there’s nothing like it.

Like all trips, you’ll leave with a 360° video keepsake—because that first flounder is one to remember.
